He is the first human character to be introduced in the series.
He sets onto his adventure later in the day. He is currently also the only character shown to have been to all of the regions. At first, Pikachu did not obey Ash and kept running away, so Ash had to tie him up. After getting chased by a flock of SpearowAsh attempted to save Pikachu from them; seeing Ash so determined to help him, Pikachu protected Ash from the Spearow by electrocuting the entire flock, thanks to being struck by lightning at that exact moment, supercharging his Electric-type move.
From then on, Pikachu and Ash became best friends forever. Since this goal is so close to his heart, he sometimes acts a bit rash and rushes to the next battle he can as fast as possible without thinking. Over the past regions, he had different caps.
Ash has two lighting bolts like - markings underneath each eye. Ash has a narrow, triangular, edgy, tuft of hair in the middle of his forehead, that come to point on the right side.
Iris and Ash both notice that the Butterfree are about to begin their migration, and sure enough, they all take off. Ash even notices a second flock of Butterfree flying away from a different location. Everyone is in awe, with Cilan commenting that nature is showing it's delicious recipe for perfection.
Satoshi and Butterfree! Until the Day We Meet Again!!
Suddenly, a Caterpie emerges from the bushes, looking dazed. Ash scans this with his Dex also. Since Caterpie is destined to evolve into Metapod and then Butterfree, Iris and Cilan deduce that it was not able to evolve with the rest and so it's alone. Seeing Caterpie takes Ash back to the first he ever caught. Flashbacks show Ash catching his Caterpie and having a good time with it.
It then shows his Butterfree migrating with a female Butterfree that it met when Butterfree saved it and they both flew off into the sunset. Ash and Pikachu discuss where Caterpie might be now, coming to the conclusion that it's happy with its new life. Then Ash talks to this Caterpie, trying to get it to evolve, but is frustrated that it's asleep. In a room alone, Ash makes a video call to Professor Oak but is surprised when Rotom answers.
Ash asks whether Oak is alright and tells Ash about Rotom's pranks. Ash returns to find Caterpie still sleeping.

He nudges it several times and it finally awakes. Ash sends out Leavanny and tells Iris who looks perplexed that they should battle because they are both Bug types and Leavanny has already evolved which would help Caterpie too.
But when Ash is ready to battle Caterpie, Caterpie falls back asleep. He decides to wake up Caterpie by telling Leavanny to use Energy Ball. But this scares Caterpie a lot and it runs away. Iris notes that the only thing it's fast at is running away.

Ash and the gang look for Caterpie and sees Caterpie sleeping in the tree. Caterpie sees them and tries to run away but falls off a branch, Ash catches it and smacks his nose on the tree trunk in the process. Ash notes that it was ignoring Caterpie's feelings and says it wants to help it evolve and Caterpie agrees. Iris says that there are leaves around the area which Bug types love. Ash and the gang find these leaves and Caterpie really likes them and is eating them quickly.
Caterpie falls asleep after a while and Ash says it has to eat a lot otherwise it won't evolve. Ash is frustrated that Caterpie went back to sleep again and they all decide to take a nap.
Caterpie wakes up and wakes Ash in the process. When he later apologises the friendship is repaired. Metapod goes on to defeat a Beedrill seriously, this Metapod cannot be stopped and evolves into a Butterfree. Butterfree becomes instrumental in helping Ash defeat Gym Leaders, catch Pokemon, and foil various Team Rocket capers.
This made what happens next all the more difficult to watch. This leads to Ash making the hard decision to let his loyal companion go and start a family. There were tearful goodbyes inside and outside the TV the day that episode aired.

They explore dark caves, survive almost freezing to death, and defeat gym leaders together, creating a strong bond between each other. Trouble was brewing, however, as Charmander approached its teenage phase. In a battle with an out-of-control Exeggutor, Charmander reaches the peak of its skills and its evolution is triggered. The inside of its Pokeball was probably wall-to-wall Eminem posters, neon bongs, and N.
A blaring at full volume. Charmeleon showed no loyalty, ignoring commands until eventually Ash stops using him altogether. On the rare occasion he's given another chance, things escalate pretty badly. In a battle against Aerodactyl, Charmeleon stubbornly fights against a flying type he is clearly outmatched by.
With his pride damaged, he evolves into Charizard to win. The only thing worse than a troubled teenager is an out-of-control adult that can fly and breathe fire. Everyone has that one friend, right? Anyway, Charizard was even more temperamental and uncontrollable, choosing only to battle against foes it deemed to be worthy challengers.
Admittedly, a winning strategy. On one occasion Charizard even cost Ash a pivotal League battle. When it was called against Sparky, a powerful Pikachu with a totally swish side-quiff, it took a nap instead of fighting.
He went from top of the class to total washout. In Pokemon, as in life, even the most wayward can be reformed through the power of love and the help of near-death experience.
